The Identity Earthquake: Navigating the Transition to Parenthood

There is so much focus on the birth of a baby, but we rarely talk about the birth of a parent. It is one of the most profound identity shifts a person can experience. One day you are an independent individual with a predictable routine, and the next, your world is centred entirely around the needs of a tiny human.

As a mother of two, I know this "identity earthquake" personally. Even as you fall in love with your new addition, it is incredibly common to feel a sense of grief for your "old self." This transition—often called matrescence when referring to the birth of a mother—is a total restructuring of your physical, emotional, and social world.

The Quiet Transition

Perinatal mental health is often framed only through the lens of "postpartum depression" or "anxiety," but for many, the struggle feels more like a quiet loss of direction. You might find yourself wondering: Where did "I" go? Why does everything feel so heavy? Why am I struggling to find my footing in a role I’ve waited so long for?

How I Support You

As a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional, I provide a space where you don't have to "have it all together." Whether you are a birthing parent or a partner, I support you in navigating the complexities of this new chapter.

In our sessions, we look at the whole picture of your well-being:

  • Validating the Transition: Moving away from the pressure of "enjoying every moment" and acknowledging the real challenges of exhaustion and isolation.

  • Managing the "What Ifs": Using CBT and DBT tools to help quiet the intrusive thoughts and anxiety loops that often accompany new parenthood.

  • Somatic Grounding: Using gentle, body-based techniques to help you feel regulated and "at home" in your body again.

You Aren’t Alone

You aren’t failing, and you aren’t alone. You are navigating a massive life transition that requires support, compassion, and time. If you feel like you are struggling to find your rhythm, I’m here to help you move from survival mode back into a place of connection and wellness.
